The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.

NAICS uses a 6-digit coding system to identify particular industries and their placement in this hierarchical structure of the classification system. The first two digits of the code designate the sector, the third designates the sub-sector, the forth digit designates the industry group, the firth digit designates the NAICS industry, and the sixth digit designates the national industry. Companies are classified and separated into industries that are defined by the same or similar production processes. Every company receives a primary NAICS code, indicating its main line of business.
