aLocal and Apache Corners was recognized at the American Planning Association National Planning Conference as the award winner of the Donald C. Hunter Excellence in Economic Development Award! The Excellence in Economic Development Award is named for Donald E. Hunter, who passed away in late 2009. He was a long-time and very active member of the American Planning Association, always urging greater attention for economic development planning. This award builds on aLocal and Apache Corners previous Golden Prospector Award for Economic Programs received in 2023 from the Arizona Association of Economic Development!

Chairman Calvin Johnson stated ” We are proud of our recognition as an economic development leader who is providing positive economic impact to the region… as well as building the Tonto Apache nation’s economy! We pride ourselves as a business leader and community partner.” The Apache Corner development consists of a $200 million dollar mixed-use development and will enhance the Mazatzal Hotel and Casino. Phase I is approximately a $60 million dollar development. The future developments include:

  • Family entertainment center
  • Three to five restaurants
  • Heritage Distilling first Arizona location
  • Health clinic/training center
  • Grocery/supermarket and two convenience stores
  • Office and manufacturing space

The economic impact on the Tonto Apache nation and the region is projected at $89 million per year with over 1,000 new jobs created. This will further diversify both the Native economy and the shopping, dining, and entertainment options for those living in and visiting Payson, Rim Country and the surrounding region.

Using netEI, aLocal’s new economic impact software, provided the analytical backing for economic and market analytics. This was pivotal in justifying the market demand for the uses in Apache Corners development. The economic impact forecast strengthened the business case for the project.

Apache Corners

Apache Corners (www.apachecorners.com) is a multi-year community and economic planning effort by the Tonto Apache Tribal Nation. Beginning in 2020, Tonto Apache focused on what economic opportunities existed that would benefit their nation’s economy and benefit the region. Approximately 75 acres on the reservation will be used to build the future Tonto Apache economy (including trust land on the east and west sides of A-87) is slated for development with an effort to capture dollars leaking outside the economy and stimulate not only the Tonto Apache economy but the entire region. The total development is slated for a mixed-use approach focused on building an economy from their initial businesses with the Tonto Apache government, Mazatzal Casino and Hotel, Convenience Store and Tire Shop.

Future developments in the first phase will include an entertainment district with a distillery and additional restaurants, two convenience stores, a family entertainment center and infrastructure improvements. Additional developments will focus on a health center, training and educational partnership, grocery store, cannabis dispensary, warehousing, and light manufacturing. The plan is to connect parcels on the east and west side of A-87 through finding ways for pedestrian safety, traffic calming and efficiency improvements.
